Oregon Peace Institute Statement on President’s racist attacks

PORTLAND, OR – The Board of Directors of the Oregon Peace Institute (OPI) condemns in the strongest terms the vile attacks by President Donald J. Trump on U.S. Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. Not only did the President refuse to apologize or retract those statements, he built on them leading to a chilling “send her back” chant at a campaign rally on July 17, 2019. We are ashamed by these attacks. They are not only un-American and repulsive, they create real dangers of violence against people of color, particularly women of color, who voice dissent. We commit ourselves to working to make the normalizing of hate and fear based on a white supremacist ideology unacceptable and fully support nonviolent confrontation with hate speech and acts of hate.
